Introduction of Valcivir 1000mg Tablet

Valcivir 1000mg Tablet contains Valacyclovir 1000mg, an antiviral medicine used to treat certain infections caused by herpes viruses. It is commonly prescribed for herpes zoster (shingles), genital herpes and herpes labialis (cold sores).

Valacyclovir helps reduce the multiplication of herpes viruses in the body. Treatment is generally more effective when started promptly after symptoms such as pain, tingling, burning or rash appear.

VALCIvir does not permanently eliminate herpes viruses from the body. For genital herpes, treatment can help control outbreaks and reduce their duration, but it does not completely cure the infection.

Benefits & Uses of VALCIvir 1000mg Tablet

VALCIvir 1000mg may be prescribed for:

  • Herpes zoster (Shingles) – helps shorten the duration and severity of the outbreak.
  • Genital herpes – helps treat outbreaks and may be used in some patients to reduce recurrent outbreaks.
  • Herpes labialis (Cold sores) – helps reduce the duration and severity of cold-sore outbreaks.
  • Other herpes-virus infections when specifically prescribed by a doctor.

For recurrent herpes infections, starting treatment as early as possible after symptoms begin may provide better results.

Side Effects of VALCIvir 1000mg Tablet

Most people tolerate valacyclovir well, but some patients may experience side effects.

Common Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Dizziness
  • Itching or skin discomfort

These effects are often mild. Contact your doctor if they persist, become severe or concern you.

Seek Immediate Medical Attention If You Experience

  • Severe skin rash, blistering or peeling
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Confusion or unusual behaviour
  • Problems with speech or coordination
  • Seizures
  • Markedly reduced urine output
  • Swelling of the legs, ankles or feet

Serious neurological or kidney-related reactions can occur, particularly in susceptible patients.

How to Use VALCIvir 1000mg Tablet

  • Take VALCIvir exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with sufficient water.
  • It can generally be taken with or without food.
  • Try to take doses at the prescribed times each day.
  • Start treatment as soon as possible after symptoms appear when instructed by your doctor.
  • Complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve.
  • Drink adequate fluids during treatment, unless your doctor has advised you to restrict fluids, as good hydration can help reduce the risk of kidney problems.
  • If you miss a dose, take it when remembered unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not take two doses together.

Important: The dose and duration vary considerably depending on whether the medicine is being used for shingles, genital herpes, cold sores or another condition. Do not determine your own dosage.

How VALCIvir 1000mg Works

VALCIvir contains Valacyclovir, which is converted in the body into Acyclovir, the active antiviral agent.

Acyclovir interferes with the herpes virus’s ability to make viral DNA. This prevents the virus from multiplying effectively, helping the body control the infection and allowing herpes lesions to heal more quickly.

Safety Advice

Kidney Disease:
Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease or reduced kidney function. Valacyclovir dosing may need adjustment, and inadequate hydration can increase the risk of kidney-related adverse effects.

Older Adults:
Older adults may have a higher risk of kidney problems and neurological side effects. Your doctor may consider kidney function when selecting the appropriate dose.

Allergy:
Do not take VALCIvir if you have previously experienced a serious allergic reaction to valacyclovir, acyclovir or any component of the medicine. Seek urgent medical attention for difficulty breathing, facial swelling or a severe rash.

Pregnancy:
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Your doctor will determine whether valacyclovir is appropriate for you.

Breastfeeding:
Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding before taking VALCIvir. Your doctor can assess the appropriate treatment for your situation.

Hydration:
Maintain adequate fluid intake during treatment unless you have been advised to restrict fluids. This is particularly important for patients at risk of kidney problems.

Drug Interactions:
Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and supplements you take, particularly if you have kidney disease or take medicines that may affect kidney function.

Genital Herpes:
Valacyclovir can help control genital herpes but does not cure the infection. Genital herpes can still be transmitted even when symptoms are absent. Follow your doctor’s advice regarding safer sexual practices.

Driving:
If you experience dizziness, confusion or other symptoms affecting alertness or coordination, avoid driving or operating machinery and contact your doctor.

Storage:
Store VALCIvir 1000mg Tablets below 25°C, away from excessive heat and moisture, and keep out of reach of children.
